Investing in a Better Future for Cape Cod
For nearly 60 years, the Canal Generating Plant has been part of the fabric of Sandwich – supporting the local economy, the regional power grid, and the community.
As electricity demand grows and the grid faces new pressures from extreme weather, it is critical to maintain and build energy infrastructure. Massachusetts has set ambitious goals to procure 5,000 MW of energy storage by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
JERA Americas is proposing to build a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Canal that will bring down energy costs for homes and businesses, provide reliable power during the moments it matters most, and support a cleaner energy future for the Cape and the Commonwealth.
The proposed project will:
Lower electricity costs by storing power when it is less expensive and discharging it to the grid during peak demand and when prices are highest.
Strengthen grid reliability during extreme weather by responding quickly and preventing blackouts.
Support a cleaner, more efficient energy system.
Continue decades of local investment in Sandwich and Cape Cod communities.
